I always enjoyed train travel. My first overnight trip was to Buffalo. I was called as a witness in a bootlegging trial. The defendant produced a receipt I had signed for payment of a bill for his wife's stay at Concourse Sanitarium. He was accused of transporting liquor from Canada to Buffalo on that day. The defence wanted me to say that I recalled seeing him. On the train I had a fine berth, when I arrived in Buffalo I was greeted cordially and entertained with a trip across the border to a Canadian nightclub. I had a fine room in a grand hotel, but on the witness stand I said, "I'm not sure!" Was it naivete, I was only 19 years old, or did I have moral scruples. I don't know what happened. My return ticket was also first class. |
